One clogged dryer vent, four years, and the repair bill nobody expected

The dryer took two cycles instead of one. That was the only symptom, it was easy to live with, and it was the house telling them something for four years.

The following is a composite of a very ordinary failure, assembled from the way this problem normally unfolds rather than from any single household. Nothing about it is unusual, which is exactly why it is worth walking through slowly. The costs are described in shape rather than in exact figures, because the figures vary enormously by region and by how much damage has accumulated before anyone looks.

Year one: the dryer needs two cycles

A laundry room in a mid 1990s two story house. The dryer sits against an interior wall, and the duct runs up inside the wall cavity, across part of the attic, and out through a roof cap. That is a long run with two elbows in it, which matters later.

The first symptom is that towels come out damp after a normal cycle. The household response is the universal one: run it again. Nobody investigates a dryer that works, only slowly, and running a second cycle costs a small amount of electricity that disappears into a bill nobody itemizes.

What is actually happening is that lint has begun to accumulate at the elbows, where the airflow slows and changes direction. Restricted airflow means the moist air leaves more slowly, which means the clothes dry more slowly, which means longer cycles, which means more lint deposited per load. The mechanism reinforces itself from the beginning.

Year two: the room gets warm and the machine gets hot

The laundry room starts feeling humid and warm during a load. The dryer cabinet is hot to the touch at the end of a cycle. Both of these are the same fact from different angles: heat and moisture that should be leaving the building are staying inside it.

The energy cost is now real but still invisible. A dryer running two full cycles instead of one is using roughly twice the energy per load, and a dryer is among the larger electrical loads in a house. Clothes drying is one of the household loads big enough that the Department of Energy sets efficiency standards for the machines, which is also why a fault here doubles consumption without changing anything a homeowner would notice on a bill they only ever see as a monthly total.

The heat is also cooking the appliance. Dryers have a thermal cutoff that trips when exhaust temperatures run high. It is a consumable part. In a well vented machine it may never operate; in a restricted one it cycles constantly, and eventually it fails.

Year three: the first repair, which fixes nothing

The dryer stops heating. A repair technician replaces the thermal fuse and the heating element, charges a few hundred dollars for parts and labor, and the machine works again. Nobody looks at the duct, because nobody called about the duct.

This is the pivotal moment in the whole sequence and it passes without comment. The repair addressed the symptom the household reported. The cause continued. Within months the cycles are long again, and the household concludes that they simply own an aging dryer.

Year four: the ceiling stain

A brown ring appears on the hallway ceiling below the attic. The assumption is a roof leak, and a roofer is called first, which is the ordinary and reasonable guess. The roof is sound.

What is found on the second visit is that the attic section of the duct has partially separated at a joint, which happens when a restricted duct pressurizes and the tape or clamp gives up. Warm, moisture laden air has been discharging into the attic instead of through the roof cap. Over a winter that produced condensation on the underside of the sheathing, wet insulation across a section of the ceiling, and the stain that finally got somebody's attention.

The remediation is now a list rather than a repair. The duct run is replaced in rigid metal with properly sealed joints. Wet insulation is removed and replaced. The affected drywall is cut out, the framing is checked and dried, and the ceiling is patched and painted. Mold remediation may or may not be required depending on what is found. This is firmly four figure work, and none of it was inevitable.

What the ten minute check would have been

Once a year, with the dryer running, go outside and put your hand near the exterior vent. You should feel a strong, warm, obvious flow of air. If it is weak, the duct is restricted somewhere. That is the whole test, and it would have caught this in year one.

Two supporting habits make it more reliable. Clean the lint screen every load, which everyone knows, and once a year pull the dryer out and vacuum the short section of duct behind it, which fewer people do. If the run is long or has multiple elbows, having it professionally cleaned every few years is cheap and takes under an hour.

Also worth knowing: flexible foil or plastic transition hose is the wrong material for anything but the last few feet, and a crushed transition hose behind a dryer pushed tight to the wall is one of the most common restrictions there is. Rigid or semi rigid metal, with as few turns as the layout allows, is what a duct run should be.

Where the compounding actually happened

Trace the money back and the pattern is clear. A minor restriction cost a few dollars a month in electricity. Untreated, it cost an appliance repair. Untreated after that, it cost a duct replacement, insulation, drywall and paint. Each stage was a larger and less avoidable version of the one before, and every stage was preceded by a symptom that was easy to live with.

The reassuring part is that this particular chain has an unusually cheap interruption point. Feeling for airflow at an exterior vent once a year is not maintenance in any demanding sense. Put it on the same weekend as the smoke detector batteries and it will happen, which is the only property a maintenance task really needs.
